The Phone That Felt Like the Future

Motorola StarTAC
Motorola StarTAC

My friend brought it from America. Motorola, she said. We have flip phones already in Japan, we think we know flip phones. But not like this one.
So small. Really so small. When she opens it,that sound, so clean, like a click, everyone at the table become quiet. We pass it around. Everyone opens and close it, maybe three times, four times. A little bit embarrassing but nobody can stop.
In Japan we say "monozukuri", the feeling when something is made with very careful thinking. This phone have this feeling. The weight. The way hinge is moving. Even the battery cover on the back, it come off too easy if you drop it. But still, even this feel like someone think about it.
I found one at a shop in Akihabara, the import shop near the station. Too expensive. My mother said I am being a stupid girl. I use it three years and not one day I think she is correct.
