Hold Very Still or It Will Skip

Sony Discman D-50
Sony Discman D-50

The instructions said not to jog with it. This was not a problem because jogging while holding a delicate piece of Sony engineering the size of a paperback book would have been difficult. 😂 Walking fast was enough to send it skipping.

Carrying it I learned to move in a particular way. Smooth. Deliberate. No sudden turns. Going up stairs required concentration. It was like carrying a full cup of tea; possible but requiring constant attention.

The case I kept it in had a belt clip that I never used because belt clips were not something I was willing to do so I carried it in my jacket pocket and held it still with my forearm.

But the sound. The first time I heard a CD through headphones on that machine I stopped walking entirely and just stood on the pavement. I could hear the breath before the vocal. The space in the room where it was recorded. Led Zeppelin, Beethoven, Fleetwood Mac, it all sounded amazing 😍. Cassettes had never done that. It was so much better that tape. Never again would I go back to tape, haha😎
